US Speaker of House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, bows out

America’s most powerful woman and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, 82, says she will be stepping down as Speaker of the House after about 20 years of being the face of the Democratic Party in the House.

In her own words: “Scripture teaches us that, for everything, there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven.

“As Speaker, it has been my privilege to play a part in forging extraordinary progress for the American people. Now, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic Caucus that I so deeply respect. I am grateful that so many are ready and willing to shoulder this awesome responsibility”.

Present and past American leaders have been reacting after her announcement of retirement.

According to President Biden: “When I think of Nancy Pelosi, I think of dignity. History will note her as the most consequential Speaker of the House of Representatives in history she is first, last, and always for the people. America owes her a debt of gratitude for her service, patriotism, and dignity.”

President Barack Obama said: “Speaker Nancy Pelosi will go down as one of most accomplished legislators in American historybreaking barriers, opening doors for others, and working every day to serve the American people. I couldnt be more grateful for her friendship and leadership”.

President Bill Clinton, on his part, said: “For the past 20 years, Speaker Pelosis skilled, principled leadership in the House has been an immeasurable source of strength and progress for our nation. Im deeply grateful for her remarkable service.”

Former US vice-president Al Gore said: “Nancy Pelosi has been the greatest, most effective Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in American history. Thank you, Speaker Pelosi for your dedicated service and leadership”.
